It is hard to hold on to hope when everything seems to be going wrong. How do you do it? Where do you turn when you need an infusion of hope? I’d love for you to answer those questions in the comments because I genuinely want to know.
I’m having a hard time feeling hopeful these days, although my state of mind is still infinitely better than last year and I’m very grateful for that change.
Why it’s hard for me to feel hopeful
I try to focus on the good things (and people!) in my life, but lately that’s been difficult. My husband lost his job and we no longer have health insurance. The income from my writing and part-time tutoring job is nowhere near enough to cover our living expenses.
Those personal challenges are not the main reason I’m finding it hard to feel hopeful, though. I’m appalled by what is happening in Ukraine, as well as the political unrest and violence that is occurring in Texas (where I live) and throughout the United States and elsewhere.
Instead of coming together to fight a global pandemic, individuals and countries are attacking each other.
Where I turn to find hope
I rarely watch the news, which is almost always bad. I prefer to search for inspirational stories about people who are making a positive difference in their communities. I then help spread the word by writing about their remarkable achievements. Here are two examples:
A 13-year-old's Remarkable Wish
What You Should Know About Dolly Parton
Another thing I do regularly that always lifts my spirits is go for a walk in a local park. Watching animals brings my focus back to enjoying the present moment and reminds me that beauty still exists in the world.
Here’s a story about those walks and other amazing wildlife encounters I’ve had throughout my life. It includes photos of a heron and a baby rabbit I saw while walking in the park.
Last but not least, I turn to my faith to find hope. It teaches me that new life is always possible, even after death. It reassures me that I am not alone. It reminds me that a way forward will be revealed if I pay attention and follow the guidance I receive instead of insisting on my own way.
Conclusion
It is hard to feel hopeful when bad things are happening in our lives and the wider world. However, there are things we can do to help ourselves find reasons for hope.
I find hope by researching and sharing inspirational true stories, watching animals while I walk in the park, and seeking God’s guidance.
How do you find hope?
Th and you for this Wendy. I am glad to have subscribed for the honest, practical and hopefully realistic view of life. Thanks for writing to help us all
Hi Wendi, I heard an interesting definition of hope. Hope and fear are the same. both believe in the unseen that hasn't happened yet. I decided then that I will make or at least try to make my actions consistent with what I hope to happen, hope will be my vision! Does that make sense?
