What Courage As Resistance Looks Like

At No Kings Day and in everyday life

I’m not naïve enough to believe that my small act of courage - showing up for a local No Kings Day rally where it’s highly unlikely that ICE agents will be present - is going to stop the horrible things that are happening now. But it will make a difference to me.

It will remind me of what I believe in. It will connect me with others who share my disgust and rage and grief at the many ways our president and those who do his bidding are needlessly endangering lives. It will bring joy as I admire the creativity and diversity of the signs and costumes. It will encourage me to persevere when I’m tempted to fall into despair and feel powerless.

We can all do something to help create a more loving and just world. For example, we can:

  • Donate to organizations that help immigrants or others who are being harmed

  • Help with voter registration and mobilization efforts

  • Vote for candidates who will hold Trump accountable and refuse to fund ICE

  • Discuss why we don’t support Trump with loved ones who do

Whether or not these and other courageous acts stop the senseless cruelty and violence, they will make a difference in our lives. They will remind us of who we are and what we care enough about to contribute our time, efforts, and/or money to.

Sometimes courage looks like just showing up and caring enough to work for a better world in whatever small ways we can.
