I have always tried to MAKE myself be positive, feeling guilty every time I say to myself 'If I do X then this awful Y will happen'... but this post of yours is so, so wise, and I shall be pondering it for a while! 😊

Thanks, Rebecca! I’m glad you found it helpful. I was intrigued by this perspective on negative visualization. It is similar to a practice recommended by ancient Stoics like Seneca. My way of negative visualization tends to be the unhelpful kind I briefly mentioned- ruminating about a worst-case scenario I consider a certainty that I cannot avoid when that’s not true. But there are times when imagining the worst can be very helpful, as in the examples I listed.
